A Blue Moon into a Harvest Moon

September tries its best to have us forget summer.
— Bernard Williams

The recent blue moon has come and gone and here we are just a few short weeks away from fall. Summer never lasts long enough, but hopefully everyone is enjoying the last few weeks of some warm weather and sun!

Crews are starting September off with finishing some fall annual infill and beginning to clean up some summer perennials in need. Unlike last year when we were struggling through a severe drought, New Hampshire has received a record amount of rain this season. This is great to combat the effects of the drought we experienced, but definitely effected our annuals this year. You should notice your woody plants and perennials really benefiting from this rainy season though, now and long term.

With all of this rain, we have run into a lot of unwelcome pests and diseases this season as we discussed in previous newsletters. Our folks are still well equip to treat plants in need organically and will continue to spray any annuals or perennials in need. We’ve also been setting traps for slugs munching in gardens which reduces the population for this year and hopefully next!

This month we will also be looking around gardens for opportunities to divide and transplant existing perennials in gardens; taking what you’ve already got to add to gaps in gardens and to help keep plants slightly separated and happy. With all of the powdery mildew we’ve seen this year and in years past, it’s important to make sure plants have room to breath to combat this disease in the future.

If you notice anything you’d like to be addressed this month, please email us at office@gardenlifenh.com or seek us out in the gardens, we’ll be happy to discuss.
